An on time arrival in Accra coupled with no wait time at passport control, baggage claim and customs brought us to our hotel in record time. The welcome sign outside our hotel was gigantic.
Most businesses and cultural sites are typically closed or get a late afternoon start on Sundays. That did not get in the way of a good day. After a ten hour flight, we opted to walk instead of ride to the National Museum of Ghana. Along the route were interesting signs, lots of chickens and no sidewalks.
The museum has exhibits which showcase the history, culture and heritage of Ghana. There are archaeological items dating to the Stone Age, contemporary Ghanan painting and crafts and cultural items including traditional clothing, furniture and musical instruments from the diverse ethnic groups in the country. Outside, a unique spotted butterfly caught my attention.
Wandering back to the hotel, hoping to find some interesting open galleries (no luck there) we came across Global Mamas. This shop was filled with vibrant batik clothing, beautiful jewelry and fun accessories. The organization’s mission is to focus on business development, health and life skills for the women of Ghana. Most of the “mamas” are widows or single mothers. The proceeds go directly to the women artists and the training programs.
Returning to the hotel, most of the fellow members of the textile tour had arrived. We gathered to go for a bite to eat and to get to know each other.
