The day began before breakfast with a sunrise walk through a lovely neighborhood in Koforidua. For some perspective, there was a giant termite mound on someone’s lawn and a house of chiefs!

The weekly bead market had our interest and our attention. Our timing was perfect. Armed with the knowledge from our bead making lesson, we were prepared to admire and purchase the intricate designed glass beads and immerse ourselves in the market. Our expectations were met and exceeded, there were rows of booths filled with beads that showed off the artistic heritage of the region.

Weighed down with an abundance of heavy glass beads, we returned to Accra to spend the rest of the day. A brief stop at the post office to buy airmail stamps provided a smile with both the design of the stamp and the mail collection box.

The sun was shining and there was time for a long walk to the edge of the Osu neighborhood. A contemporary art exhibit at Gallery 1957 offered a mixture of works by multiple African artists.

Dinner was at Tatale, a vegan restaurant and I had my first fufu which is like a giant dumpling. It is mashed casava and plantain(coco yam). It tastes like a chewy potato gnocchi. It is typically served in a spicy soup with vegetables and some protein. After I finished, I learned the proper way to eat it is with your hands, not with a spoon! You are to pinch a piece, make a dent dunk into the soup and swallow not really chew. Oh well, there will be a next time.

Changing one letter in the restaurant from a T to an M makes it Tamale… where we are headed tomorrow on an early morning flight. There will be a change of scenery and a change of climate as we head to the northern savanna area of Ghana.
