Here today, Ghana tomorrow

Originally, Ghana was not on my top ten new places to visit. However, an art focused tour moved Ghana to the top of the list.

Ghana is a sub-Saharan African country on the Gulf of Guinea which opens to the Atlantic Ocean. Gold, cocoa, shea nuts and coffee are some of the natural resources which kept the country occupied and colonized for centuries by several European countries. The coastal castles originally established as trading settlements later became dungeons and out-posts for the slave trade.

Ghana gained their independence from it’s final colonizer, Great Britain, in 1957. Today, the country is a burgeoning hub for the arts and technology in Africa.

This journey will include more than visiting historic and natural wonders. I am excited to participate in workshops including batik, indigo dying, Krobo glass beads, weaving Fugu and Kente cloth, shea nut products plus cooking local dishes with locals. Also, a former work colleague’s sister lives in Accra and she will share some of her favorite galleries and local haunts.

Let the adventurous times begin.
