Ready, Set…Go!

Less than 24 hours and we will be in Portugal. We are waiting at the airport with anticipation to begin this wonderful journey. This is much different than our cross US adventure. Then, our Real Estate changed to Wheel Estate. Now our Wheel Estate has changed to Merrell Moab waterproof shoes. My sister-in-law gave me a wonderful anklet made by a Spanish artisan who lives in one of the towns along the Camino.  It will be worn and is already a treasure. Our luggage consists of a 23 pound backpack and a camelbak for hydration. Happily for me, my husband will be carrying the pack. I will be carrying the water.

Reviewing the towns we pass through and reading other peregrinó accounts has me psyched to traverse two-thirds of the length of Portugal and out to the western most part of Spain.

A little history before our walk.

Portugal is 900 years old, and even though it has a relatively small area, it played a crucial role in world history. As of today, it is the oldest country in Europe with the same borders.

In 1974, Portugal became a free democracy, and in 1986 it joined the current European Union.

Portugal produces about half the world’s output of commercial cork. We plan on opening several bottles of vinho verde and assisting the cork economy in our modest way.
