Heading west from Seward to Homer the weather seemed promising. We stopped at Cooper Landing to spend several hours on the Kenai River fly fishing.

The small town, originally settled by gold prospectors, is now best known for fishing and hiking. It is at the intersection of the Kenai and Russian rivers, which makes it an especially fertile area for fishing. The river is a teal green due to suspended ultra-fine glacial silt. The river runs very fast, is quite deep and filled with all kinds of fish. Trout licenses in hand, our guide/mate from Drifters Lodge gave us a lesson on casting, mending and holding our rods along with all the safety measures we needed. Off we went to catch and release.

We all managed to catch different types of fish including Rainbow trout, Sockeye salmon and Dolly Varden trout (Atlantic Char). We also saw many bald eagles, Dall sheep and took in the beauty along the banks of the river but no bear or moose sightings. It even stopped raining for a good portion of our time on the river. It was a wonderful way to spend the day.
Glad you are safely home where you can take off a few layers of clothes and dry out while celebrating David’s birthday. Thanks for all the wonderful photos. I really enjoy them. The photo with David and the fish has this incredible cabin in the background. What a lucky shot to catch with those great smiles and a fish about to return to its family! We got your post card yesterday, and we are sending love back.. Hope to see you both soon.
