The Last Frontier is the motto on Alaska license plates and you understand the nickname as you fly into the airport. It is an inspiring state known for its beauty, glaciers, wildlife, northern lights, and much more.

Located in the south-central part of Alaska, on Cook Inlet, Anchorage is flanked by the Chugach mountains and is filled with hundreds of parks and more than 40 percent of the state’s population. There are museums music, restaurants and wildlife to enjoy before heading to the surrounding wilderness.
There is plenty of daylight at the end of August, about 16 hours a day. We had time to enjoy walking on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, visiting the Anchorage Museum and checking out the downtown scene.

We also managed to enjoy fireweed ice cream at Wild Scoops and some delicious food at a few favorite local restaurants. The flowers are abundant and gigantic. The downtown is a mix of buildings that include log cabins from the early 1900s to modern glass office buildings. There are many murals and public art pieces around the city.

Anchorage is a sprawling city which has endless options to fill multiple days with unique experiences. We have just scratched the surface and we are already looking forward to squeezing in a few more activities when we circle back.
What an incredible start to your journey in Anchorage! 16 hours of daylight is tough to beat with some good ice cream!
