Scenic Sete Cidades and “Sensi-ational” spa time

A scenic drive through farms, mountains and dense vegetation brought is to the SENSI resort on the western side of Sao Miguel Island. The weather changed along with our scenery. It was sunny and spectacular when we arrived at the spa. It was blissful.

Not far from the resort there is a pair of lakes named Sete Cidades. Technically one body of water, the volcanic lagoon appears like two separate lakes—Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake) separated by a narrow stretch of land with a bridge. The water is surrounded with lush landscape and blue hydrangea. Science has proven that the lakes reflect sunlight in two different colors, we however, did not quite see the dramatic color difference, but we did see the lakes from above and from ground level. The colored lakes come with a romantic fairy tale.

Legend has it that a princess and a shepherd fell in love, and their romantic liaisons took place in the hills over Sete Cidades. The king discovered the clandestine lovers and forbade them to meet, as kings often do. The young princess had emerald green eyes, and the shepherd boy’s eyes were hydrangea blue. When their romance was dashed they each cried a lake of tears, one green and one blue.

Fairytales aside, we were hungry and there was nothing available by the lakes. We headed to the capital city of Ponta Delgada for an early dinner and some local color while Portugal was playing Slovenia in a soccer (fútbol) match. the downtown area is filled with pedestrian streets and tiled walkways similar to to Porto and Lisbon. A Tasca restaurant was filled with locals and tourists and good food and drink.

We arrived back at our hotel to take a short walk by the ocean and then to watch Portugal win the match 3-0 with penalty shots. Go Portugal!!!!
