A is for Azores

The Azores, a principality of Portugal, are a nine island archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Our plane touched down on Sao Miguel, the largest island and the most popular for tourists. This island is known for its pristine nature, volcanic scenery, beaches, rich marine life, waterfalls, beautiful flowers and quaint towns to name a few.

Our first stop was the Ribeira Grande beach in the Santa Barbara area to take in surfers and lunch. The calm waters kept the surfers away, but we did enjoy a spectacular lunch at Tuka Tula. There was plenty of lobster and seafood and we sipped some fresh local pineapple juice. We took a short walk through lava sands past dramatic coastline and relaxed horses.

The weather changed from cloudy to sunny to drizzly about every fifteen minutes. There are winding and very narrow roads that cut through verdant farms dotted with happy cows.

Our evening included an outstanding multi course dinner at the Santa Barbara resort.

Pineapple drink called “the queen“
Octopus and purée potatoes
Bread basket with delicious dips
Amberjack fish with shallot on mashed potatoes and apinach
Chocolate and pistachio tart with vanilla ice cream

The whole day was filled with deliciousness. The perfect beginning to our Azorian adventure.
