Waterfalls, Trains and Pollyanna

Cathedral Ledge, Echo Lake, Thompson Falls and the Basin are some of the short hiking trails in the White Mountains that lead to great views and pretty waterfalls with no bears in sight.Just as enjoyable as the great outdoors are the many covered bridges and quaint little towns including North Conway where there is a vintage train station and train.

The town has many unique shops and a great two-story general store, Zeb’s, filled with penny candy, houseware items and souvenirs. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the public North Conway Country Club overlooking the train station, the golf course and the foothills of the Presidential Range. After lunch we headed to the scenic and twisty Kancamagus Highway to cross to the town of Littleton. The highway is as much fun to pronounce as it is to ride on. We joyfully arrived in the glad town of Littleton with its symbol of Pollyanna after the main character in the children’s book by Anna Sewell. Pollyanna is represented all over town on banners, sidewalk crossings and there is even a bronze statue of her at the front steps of the library. It is easy to have a Pollyanna outlook in this charming and historic New England town. Optimism renewed and broad smiles on our faces, we departed Littleton, New Hampshire with parting waves to this glad town and great state of New Hampshire.
